Homeward Studio is also based in the historic market town of Leek in the Staffordshire Moorlands on the edge of the Peak District National Park. Leek is steeped in creativity and commerce, as well as this history of the Arts and Craft Movement and the textile industry. William Morris frequently visited between 1875 and 1878 to study dyeing techniques with Thomas Wardle, the owner of a local dye works, and it was Leek which provided his firm with silk.
It was through the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, which Morris founded in 1877, that he came into contact with Larner Sugden, the local architect, who has blessed the town with so many of its handsome buildings.
Ten minutes in one direction you’re in the hills surrounded by stunning scenery and wonderful walks and half an hour the other way you are in amongst the pottery towns of Stoke-on-Trent with factory shops and tours, museums and heritage and a rich industrial landscape to explore.
We’re about an hour away from Manchester and Sheffield and a 90-minute train ride from London town.
For a long time, Leek has been known as a centre of antiques and during its heyday attracted many overseas trade visitors. It still has a great Saturday Antiques Market in the centre of town and now has a thriving community of makers and creative businesses, brilliant independent shops, its own art centre and numerous cafes, pubs and restaurants. Leek makes for a great day out.
