Nicky Hancock of Homeward Studio and Jacob Littlejones Furniture

The mid-century inspired Ette collection is designed and made here in Leek, using locally felled and seasoned Staffordshire oak. The collection was designed by me (Homeward owner Nicky Hancock) and local cabinet maker Jacob Littlejones (my husband!).

We designed the Ette stool to combine our skills and design and make a characterful, unique piece of furniture that is sustainably made with materials and processes at its heart.

The oak Ette footstool – oval and rectangular shapes – £195

The new oak topped Ette stool has four turned and tapered legs and is made with a solid oak oval or rectangular top with a simple chamfered edge.

We designed the Ette stool with smaller spaces in mind. We wanted it to be a useful and multifunctional item that could be used as a footstool, extra seating or a side table. It also sits under our Ette bench for nifty space saving.

There’s a good contrast between the thickness of the top and the elegantly tapered round shape of the lathe turned legs. The legs are set in the top with wooden wedges and are set at quite a steep angle, splaying the legs that gives the stools their distinctive look.

We’ve tried different thicknesses of wood for the tops, different details and shapes for the edge. We’ve been playing with the sizes and heights over the last few batches to arrive at what we have today.

Available with made-to-order seat pad – £95

We now stock a selection of one-off ready-made seat pads for the foot stool and bench. These are made using surplus fabric left over from our upholstery projects. These surplus fabric pads are priced at a lower cost since we’re using up waste fabric so but will always be ‘one offs’. They’re always made from the best quality natural fibre upholstery fabrics such as wool, linen and cotton.

A lot of the fabric we use is from brilliant independent fabric designers who produce in small runs of hand-printed cloth in block or screen printed designs. We have accounts too with larger sized British based fabric manufacturers of woven wool, flax and cotton cloth.

We can also design and make a seat cushion to order in a size and fabric of your choice. You can choose your own seat pad fabric from our collection of books and swatches. These are quoted individually.

We supply made-to-order detachable seat pads for the Ette Benches. The loose cushions are held in place with press studs on the underside so they can be removed, making the whole range more flexible and multipurpose.

We supply a wide choice of beautiful fabrics including environmentally friendly natural fabrics. With sustainability at the forefront of our mind, we offer fabrics to our customers that are natural and biodegradable. These range from wool, flax/linen hemp and cotton to a growing range of innovative fabrics made from recycled waste plastics and recycled fabric.

Oak stools made with local wood

The Ette stools and benches are made with Shelmore Timber’s beautiful character oak from the Norbury Park Estate on the Staffordshire Shropshire border.

We were so happy when we found the brilliant local timber supplier Shelmore Timber on our doorstep. They are doing innovative and brilliant things over there on the Norbury Estate. Implementing an active reforestation programme by planting 70 acres of new trees per year, they aim to ensure their woodland cover increases and never decreases. They’ve also put into place numerous strategies to become 5000 tonnes carbon negative per year. They were granted a Royal Forestry Society award for ‘Planting Woodlands for Climate Change’ in 2014 for their sustainable approach to woodland management.

The timber is felled and seasoned within its own estate and we are lucky enough to handpick it from a sustainably managed supply for our Ette range.

The history of the Ette stool

Our first Ette design was based on an original kidney shaped 1950s ‘stoolette’ that I found at an antique fair. In 2018, I set about restoring it, making new legs, replacing the crumbling latex pad and retained the original fabric that I’d found hidden beneath badly stapled on, replacement fabric.

The original retro ‘stoolettes’ I was finding were often butchered with shortened legs and their fabric either completely destroyed or really badly covered up. As I unearthed more stools I found out they all shared the same design of a woven cotton/linen cloth but in different colours – I found a yellow, a brown (which we still have at home) and a red.  It was so lovely to find the original cloth on some and to realise that they originally came in a choice of colours.

The process of unpicking and putting it back together enabled me to study the design and understand how it was made, which informed the size and shape of my own Ette Footstool, as well as the best way to construct it.
